Artist’s Statement & Bio

Brigid Watson creates thick texture and movement with large quantities of harmoniously colored oil paint. She is a descendant of the Abstract Expressionists and makes many of their formal concerns her own.  Yet there is a personal narrative for Watson as she describes her connection to the Ab Ex movement in relation to her own Eastern European heritage.  She writes, “The Abstract Expressionists were Americans, it was an American art movement, but the artists were mainly of Eastern and Western descent, like me. I learned first hand about the Expressionists from the source; from people who had lived in Europe and understood both the tradition of painting and how to invent within that tradition. I take the baggage of the 20th Century White European Male Genius and make paintings from what's left over with a 21st Century White American Female Perspective.”

Watson holds a Masters degree from NYU and undergraduate degrees from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University.  She exhibits her work in  Venice, New York, Singapore, Toronto,  and Boston. She is numerous private and corporate collections world wide. She has been the recipient of several grants including the Clara Scarempelli Purchase Prize in Venice, Italy, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.

Originally from Ohio she lives and works in Boston, MA.
